A Quick Guide to Styling Your Bed

TIPS FOR ADULTS & CHILDREN’S BEDROOMS

Our bed is one of the most important pieces of furniture in our home. It's where we spend a large portion of our lives, so it's essential that it's comfortable and inviting. Having a well-styled bed will lift the overall aesthetic, and feel of your room. I’ve put together some easy tips on how to style a bed, for adults and children.

STYLING TIPS FOR ADULTS

  1. START WITH A NEUTRAL BASE
Choose plain sheets and a duvet cover in a soft colour or with a subtle pattern, as your base. This allows you to then add pops of colour and pattern with your cushions and throw.

  2. ADD TEXTURE
Layer your bed with different textures - a chunky knit throw, a lush velvet or a beautiful natural linen. Look for tassels and fringing for added texture. This adds depth and interest to your bed.

  3. FOR THE ADVENTUROUS SOULS OUT THERE, MIX & MATCH PATTERN!
Patterns aren’t only for kids! Don't be afraid to mix and match patterns and colours for a playful look. You can choose different patterns for your cushions, throws, duvet cover, or bring in some fun with your sheets. Kip & Co are master at mixing pattern and colour, so look to them for some inspiration if you’re not sure where to start.

  4. PLAY WITH COLOUR
Use colour to create mood in your bedroom. If you want a calming, relaxing space, stick to muted, pastel shades and natural tones. For a more vibrant look, choose bold, bright colours.

  5. CUSHIONS
Experiment with different cushion sizes - use a combination of large and small cushions to create a layered effect. Consider a Euro size pillowcase, plus one or two smaller throw cushions. While your other half may roll their eyes at cushions (they’re not only for the couch!), it’ll look great - tell them cushions adds comfort and support while sitting up in bed.

STYLING TIPS FOR CHILDREN

  1. GO PLAYFUL
I like children's bedding to be fun and colourful. Choose patterned bed linen with bold designs to create a playful atmosphere, or pick a more classic pattern like a check or stripe, for an older child.

  2. MIX & MATCH PATTERNS
Just like with adult bedding, mixing and matching patterns is a great way to create a fun and playful look. For a more toned back version intermix pattern and solid blocks of contrasting colour for a pop.

  3. ADD PLAIN COLOUR
If too much pattern isn’t your style, then add plain pillowcases, sheets and throw to pare the pattern back. Alternatively, use predominately plain bedding and add patterns pillowcases. Doing this stops the bed from looking too busy, while still adding personality.

  4. THEMED BEDDING
If you’ve wondered how to incorporate your child’s favourite character or interest into their room without buying a crass duvet colour (i.e Disney princess) choosing bedding that pulls out a colour from their favourite thing instead. For example, for a dinosaur loving child use dark greens, softened with softer greens. Bring the dinosaur theme into their room through artwork. The bonus of this is that as our child grows, and tastes change, their bedding can stay as it is, while artwork can be easily swapped out.

  5. ADD TOYS & FUN CUSHIONS
Soft, cuddly toys or some fun shaped cushions can add an extra element of comfort to a child's bed. Plus, they make great snuggle buddies.

Whether you're styling an adult or a child's bed, remember to have fun and experiment with different textures, patterns, and colours. Using the tips above you can create a comfortable and inviting space that reflect your personal tastes and style.
