Planning & Creating a Gallery Wall

TOOLS AND TIPS FOR A STUNNING GALLERY WALL DISPLAY

Gallery walls are a great way to showcase your favourite pieces of art, photos and objects, and reflect your personal style and interests. Planning a gallery wall can seem overwhelming, but with a few tips outlined below, you can create a beautiful and cohesive display in your home. If you have been following along on my instagram feed, you may have seen the gallery wall I recently created. It was a fun project that turned out beautifully, and with a bit of planning and the right tools, it was a walk in the park to execute.

PLANNING A GALLERY WALL:
Before attempting your gallery wall, I recommend creating a plan. Select your favourite pieces and lay them out on the floor to experiment with different arrangements. Using paper, create a template of each item and tape them to the wall. This step provides a preview of the final look and will help to identify any challenging areas. Ensure the layout is balanced and suitable for the wall size.

TOOLS YOU’LL NEED:
Having the right tools on hand will simplify the process of creating your gallery wall. These tools will make the task efficient and enjoyable, allowing you to achieve a professional looking gallery wall with ease. To make the process fast and easy, gather the following tools:

  1. A level

  2. A ruler for marking distances and picture hook locations

  3. Pencil and ruler

  4. Hammer and picture hooks or 3M Velcro strips

DESIGN TIPS FOR YOUR GALLERY WALL:

  1. Hang Different Scale Artwork and Photos: Mix different scale artwork and photos to add interest and depth. Combine large statement pieces with smaller frames for contrast. Experiment with both portrait and landscape orientations.

  2. Hang Artwork That Is All the Same Size: For a clean and modern look, hang artwork that is all the same size. Use identical frames to achieve a cohesive appearance.

  3. Mix Photos, Prints, and Hand-Painted Artwork: Create a visually interesting and unique gallery wall by mixing different types of artwork. Incorporate personal photographs, art prints, and hand-painted pieces to showcase your style.

  4. Optional: Choose to keep frame colours the same for a more cohesive look. This will create a clean and modern aesthetic, but feel free to group together different frames.

Incorporating a gallery wall in your home is a great way to express your style and interests. Whether you opt to blend various artwork types or maintain consistent frames, with a bit of planning and creativity you can create a beautiful and unique display that will add personality to your space.
